Arima Blanchisseuse Road
In order to catch the birds depart at 7:00am. Slowly drive along the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, along the road the forest drapes its long branches over the road giving you a good view of the forest birds as they move in the branches. As you stop and take short strolls along the quiet road you will see many birds, such as; Trogons, Woodpeckers, Spinetails, Channel-billed Toucans, Humming birds, Crested Oropendolas diving in and out of their meter long nests, and at the higher elevations you may see Speckled or Blue-capped Tanagers, most of the time in the background you will hear (and maybe see) the loud and distinctive call of the Bearded Bellbird.
At vantage points where there are breaks in the forest you will have a beautiful view of the valley below you, and the mountain range as it spreads before you. As this area is the windward side of the Northern Range there are serious up drafts. Cruising on these up drafts are several Swifts, Vultures, and birds of prey, such as Ornate Hawk-Eagles, Gray Hawks, and Black Hawks.
Drive down to the North Coast at Blanchisseuse and have a lovely lunch there in a restaurant near to the beach. After that take a short time to relax. Then do some birding along the Marianne river mouth where you may see a Silvered Antbird or a Green Kingfisher. Absorb the beauty of Trinidad’s rugged North Coast as you see Pelicans, Terns, and the Magnificent Frigatebird.
Ease your way back on the Arima/Blanchisseuse Road, along the way stop at any opportune place to see any birds that may appear as they do their evening feeding.
