Mountain Bike Grande Riviere
MOUNTAIN BIKE TOCO TO GRANDE RIVERRE CROSS COUNTRY ADVENTURE:
This ride offers a wide variety of mountain biking experiences from easy riding along country roads, fun single track to barreling downhills.
Today's tour involves long drives so we meet at Superpharm Maraval at 5:00am and head out towards Toco. Our ride starts near the light house at Galera Point where Trinidad’s vibrant North and East Coasts meet at the clashing of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. We warm up easing our way along paved country road through the coconut palms; soon the road deteriorates to a bumpy, rocky road that climbs slowly. Fun single track through rain forests puts smiles on faces and soon this turns to all out glee as downhill to Cumana ensues.
We travel towards the west on an old country road which while undulating is a steady climb through farms and forests along Anglais Trace towards Harris and our highest summit of 700 feet above sea level. Our road, called Spicer Trace, deteriorates into a jeep trail and becomes both more fun and more challenging to ride as it slowly becomes single track descending through rivers, turning north and climbing out, only to descend as you fly through farms of bananas, plantains, papaya, and cocoa all the way to Sans Souci.
We emerge out of the forests onto the coast at Sans Souci, and you would have covered about 10 miles. After a relax we ride the Paria Branch Trace for about 2 hours to get to Grande Riviere while covering 9 km or 5.75ml at with an approximate 1150-foot or 350-meter total increase in elevation.. The road starts paved, which then becomes an undulating muddy, single-track trail through dense forest where we have fun getting muddy descending to rivers crossing the trail and ride up to ridges separating these rivers. Once in the forest its wonders show themselves for your enjoyment, Golden Silk Spiders spin their traps for insects on the side of the trail as large Morpho butterflies send their electric blue colours piercing your heart. The final wonder is the adrenalin kicking fun downhill into Grande Riviere and the end to our adventure.
After lunch in Grande Riviere we can road ride back.
